Christmas cactus are a popular houseplant because they respond to shorter days by developing flower buds that provide a festive floral display in the home. These houseplants are available in an array of colors and can live for decades, getting larger and more spectacular as the years go by. Originating in Central and South America in areas where orchids commonly grow, they grow best when placed in an area of the home that receives indirect sunlight. Like most plants, they grow best in well-drained soil. They require more water than traditional cactus, sometimes a few times a week. When watering, water thoroughly and then let the soil dry out between watering.
