Carrots
One of the most popular and rewarding vegetables to grow in home gardens, carrots are available in an array of colors, including orange, red, purple and white. Their crunchy, sweet roots are excellent for snacking and eating fresh as well as roasting, baking and cooking into a variety of recipes. Carrots grow best when they receive full sun, or six or more hours of direct sunlight daily. They also like well-drained, loamy or sandy soils. If you have clay soil, look for carrot seed varieties suitable for growing in clay soils. Another option is to grow carrots in raised beds or containers. Before planting carrot seed, make sure to loosen the soil at least 8 inches deep.
