Pear of the Earth
This native of the Andes in Central American provides a generous harvest of tasty tubers in the fall with a flavorful combination of watermelon apple and pear. They are very juicy and can be eaten raw or cooked. Related to the Sunflower with a similar growth habit and lovely golden yellow summer flowers. Grows 4-6' tall in full sun. Hardy in zones 7-11. Can be grown in the north where some of the tubers can be replanted the following spring. Smallanthus sonchifolius 'Yacon'
